Betty Sac Buckskin, the youngest child of Jack and Nannie Deerhead Sack, was born at home in Iron Post on January 15, 1933. She passed away November 23 in Tulsa after a short illness. As a young child, she attended Sequoyah Vocational School in Tahlequah, and later was very proud of earning her GED while in her thirties.
She was first married to Wayne Phillips from Porter, and after being divorced for several years, was married to Joe Dean Buckskin. She and Joe were together nearly fifty years until his passing earlier this year. The couple had a blended family of seven, and also raised a great-granddaughter as their own child.
The two most important things in her life were her faith and her family. Her husband Joe was an ordained Baptist minister, and Betty was a dedicated helpmate during his years of service. They remained active in their church after Joe retired, and enjoyed going to different Indian churches in the area. A loving mother and grandmother, she was a homemaker and wonderful cook, and was known especially for her chicken and dumplings and great pies. Before her health prevented her, she loved camping on the creek with her family, catching crawdads, gathering wild onions, and spending time with friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents: husband, Joe; one son, Gerald Phillips; one stepson, Sammy Joe Buckskin; one grandson, Steve Parker; three brothers, Nelson Sack, Emmet Sack, and Chester Sack; and three sisters, Florine Carden, Dollie Holman, and Ada Henson;
She is survived by the great-granddaughter she and Joe raised, Kayla Parker; two daughters, Sandra Parker and Glenda McKinney, both of Tulsa; and three sons, Wayne Phillips Jr. of Locust Grove; Vernon Phillips and wife Barbara of Iron Post; Brian Phillips and wife Becky of Tulsa; and many grandchildren, great-children, great-great-children, nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.
