Dean Thorpe Johnson, 79, of Pryor, Oklahoma, passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2012 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dean was born on April 30, 1932 in Big Spring, Texas, the son of Alvin Lyden Johnson and Elsie Merle (Corbin) Johnson. Dean faithfully served his Country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He also served in the United States Navy Reserve. Dean married Peggy Joyce Hulbert, making a home for his new family of six children. Dean managed Movie Theatres including the Allred in Pryor, later working as a radio announcer for the Pryor Radio Station during the 1970's. In 1982, they moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where he managed motels for various chains including Motel 6. In June of 2001, they moved back to Pryor to retire and be with their family. Dean was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed going to McDonalds every morning with his newspaper, visiting with old friends. He enjoyed reading and window shopping. Always with a smile, Dean enjoyed joking and making people laugh. Dean loved the color Yellow! He dearly loved spending time with his grand and great grandkids and his dogs, Pinky and Cricket. He enjoyed miniature trains and puppets for his grandchildren. Dean was a member of the St. Mark Catholic Church in Pryor. He will be remembered as an intelligent, kind hearted man who loved his family and friends as much as we all loved him. Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 30, 2012 in the St. Mark Catholic Church. A Rosary will be held on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in the Shipman‘s Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Friday with Military Honors with Mark Hulbert, Michael Hulbert, John Hulbert, Greg Hulbert, Russell Mereo and Josh Rogers serving as pall bearers. Dean is survived by his children, Charles F. Hulbert of Walterboro, SC, Mark Hulbert of Walterboro, SC, David Hulbert of Pryor, OK, Michael Hulbert of Walterboro, SC and Sharon Mereo of Pryor, OK; a niece, Rayolene Tierman and nephew, Clark Gertner ; 13 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Johnson in 2006; his son, William Hulbert; his parents, Alvin and Elsie Johnson and his sister, Edith Horner.
