Lincoln Dwight "Doc" Strawhun, 68, was born on April 12, 1943 in San Antonio Texas, and departed from this life on March 25, 2012 in Claremore Oklahoma. He made a profession of faith and was baptized on April 11, 1954 at the First Christian Church in Pryor, Oklahoma. Dwight graduated from Pryor High School in 1961 and attended Oklahoma State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Dwight continued his education at the University of Missouri, where he earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration. Dwight received a commission in the United States Navy, where he served aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Following his military service, Dwight worked at the Centers for Disease Control, until continuing his education at the Southern California College of Optometry. Dwight graduated, earning a Doctoral of Optometry Degree. Dwight returned to Pryor Oklahoma, and joined his father's Optometry practice which he later purchased. Dwight continued the practice at Northeast Vision Clinic, until his retirement in 2005. While working at his practice, Dwight taught courses in the School of Optometry at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. Dwight was an accomplished musician, who gave private lessons to children throughout Mayes County. Dwight played in a band with several college friends, and was also a member of the stage band at 1st Baptist Church in Pryor. Ken Grass the Professor of Music at Tulsa University often referred to Dwight as his "mentor", from his association with Dwight in the music program at Pryor High School. Dwight was known for his compassionate and gentle spirit giving countless hours of service to the community. Dwight provided Optometry services at no charge to the Pryor Free Clinic, and served the citizens of Pryor through the Sertoma Club. Dwight quickly gained the reputation as a man who could be depended upon to get the job done. Dwight married Mary Horton in 1982 and they remained as husband and wife until his death. Mary remained devoted to Dwight throughout his life, and faithfully cared for him during his extended illness. The family would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the medical professionals at the Veteran Center in Claremore. Your care for Dwight during the past four years has been exemplary, and deeply appreciated. The family would also like to thank the pastors, staff, and members of 1st Baptist Church in Pryor for your thoughts, prayers, and actions during these times. Dwight was a man of remarkable character who will be missed by his family, friends, and those he helped through his community service. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 11 a.m., in the First Baptist Church of Pryor with Dr. Mike Cox officiating. Interment will be in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery at 2 p.m. with Military Honors. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the funeral home. He is survived by his wife, Mary of the home; his sons, Lincoln and wife, Beatriz Strawhun of San Antonio, TX, Scott and wife, Ann Horton of Pryor, OK; daughter, Stephanie and husband, Jerry Webster of Pryor, OK; eight grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Ruby Strawhun; one sister, Judy Terneus.
