Edward Elton Giles

Edward Elton Giles, a beloved husband, father, educator, and friend, was called home on October 6, 2024, at the age of 92. Born on May 15, 1932, Ed’s journey through life was filled with love, dedication, and a deep appreciation for the world around him. On May 22, 1962, Ed married his dear wife Bettye at the Methodist church in Haviland, Kansas. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, companionship, and the joy of raising their children on their wheat farm. Ed’s passion for education shone brightly throughout his career as he taught math and science in various schools across Kansas. His academic journey began in Manhattan, KS, where he graduated high school, and continued as he earned his bachelor’s degree from Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. In 1979, Ed and his family transitioned to Oklahoma, where they embraced a new chapter as cattle ranchers. The Rocky G Ranch became a sanctuary that showcased their love for Charolais cattle. Ed taught math and science in Salina, Oklahoma for two years, embedding himself within the community and forging lifelong connections. His active participation in the Lions Club allowed him to enthusiastically engage in local traditions, including the cherished responsibility of putting up flags during the holidays. In 2005, Ed and Bettye relocated to Joplin, Missouri, where they continued to embrace life with open arms. Ed volunteered for Hospice, offering compassion and support to those in need, all the while finding joy in community concerts and even making a mark in local theater productions like The Glass House. Classical music, especially the works of Bach, provided a comforting backdrop during his moments of relaxation, which he often spent bird watching or tending to his garden. Ed and Bettye shared a love for square dancing that lasted 15 years. Their passion for this vibrant activity led them to travel far and wide, creating cherished memories and friendships in places as diverse as Salt Lake City and even London, England. Their enduring partnership was a testimony to the love they cultivated over the years. They moved back to Pryor in 2010 to be near family, where they enjoyed spending time with loved ones and being part of the community. In recognition of their hard work and dedication to agriculture, Ed and Bettye were honored as Mayes County Farm Family of the Year in 2004. This accolade reflected their commitment not only to their ranch but also to their community. Ed's legacy is one of warmth, intellect, and kindness.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bettye Giles of the home; children, David and Monya Giles, Bertram, Texas, Annette Giles Columbia, Missouri, and Mark (Mitch) Giles Wichita, Kansas; grandchildren, Heather Baucom, Bryan Markovich, Brett Markovich, Rachelle Red, Amelia Hanson, Michael Giles, and Mersades Binns Wells; 9 great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his first wife, one son Steve Giles, one grandson Allen Wertz, one brother, 3 sisters and 3 brother in laws, 3 nephews, 2 nieces, his Parents, Grandparents and numerous Aunts and Uncles. 

A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Shipman's Funeral & Cremation Service in Pryor, Oklahoma. The funeral service will follow at Creekside Church at 2:00 PM. on Thursday, October 10, 2024. Burial will follow in the Graham Memorial Cemetery with Duane Brown, Greg Teel, Lynn Teel, Bryan Markovich, Brett Markovich, and Michael Giles serving as casket bearers.
