Evelyn Swearengin was born on June 13, 1925 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Sadie Ann (Beckemeier) and Joe Miller; at the approximate age of 2, her family moved to the prairie west of Salina. She attended Mayes School and Salina. She married Hiram "Junior" Swearengin on December 24, 1941 in Salina, Oklahoma. She and Junior moved to Vanport, OR in 1944, returning to the Pryor area in 1945, where they remained raising their two daughters. Evelyn had a special place in her heart for children. Family and friends all knew their children would be safe and loved in her care. As a results, Carol and Sharon, had different sets of "siblings" at various times. One "surrogate" child, Larene, remains to this day calling her mom. As Evelyn's "girls" grew up, she became a member of the First Baptist Church becoming involved in the girls activities. Her participation included teaching young children in Sunday School, helping sponsor and cooking for various activities, in which the girls took part. She enjoyed very much being the Young Women's Auxiliary leader and being a sponsor for the Singspiration Youth Choir. She has followed this group of youth through their lives as much as possible being very proud of their various accomplishments. Evelyn was a collector and keeper of many things. One was making sure she read the daily newspapers from which she clipped any article about anyone she had known through the years. It appeared she started this collection during WWII. She often shared these with the people who were mentioned, if not she kept them to read again at a later date. During her 74 years of marriage, some of her best memories were gathered traveling with Junior. They enjoyed visiting family and friends from coast to coast and visited the 48 states. In their more mature years, she and Junior participated in the FBC Keenagers and the trips with this group brought new adventures and closer friendships.
