Harvey Floyd

July 25, 1937 — September 18, 2015

Harvey Joe Floyd was born on July 25, 1937 in Franklin County, Arkansas. He was the youngest of seven children. His parents were George Harvey Floyd and Zetta Arzola (Jewell) Floyd. He grew up and attended school in Charleston, Arkansas. He passed from this life on September 18, 2015 at the age of 78.Harvey spoke often of his wonderful parents and childhood. His was a hardworking family who helped anyone who needed it. Harvey witnessed the great generosity of his mother and dad and was so proud of them. From 1955 to 1957, Harvey served aboard the USS Rochester, part of the U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet, patrolling the seas of the Far East. When his service in the Navy ended, he returned to his hometown of Charleston, Arkansas, after which he moved to the Portland, Oregon area where he lived until 1977, when he moved to Edmond, Oklahoma. He took a job with the Edmond School District in 1980 and served as their Director of Transportation until 1987 when he retired for health reasons. He took his job very seriously and the safety of the children was his number one priority. He was very well respected and formed lasting friendships there. Harvey served as president of the Oklahoma Student Transportation Association for a year in the mid 1980's. In 1990, he and his wife, Bennie Floyd, moved to Boswell, Oklahoma. Harvey and Bennie were very active in the community and the Church of Christ there. Among other things, they were instrumental in obtaining funding for the construction of a veteran's memorial at the cemetery in Boswell. He and Bennie were great fans of the Statler Brothers and for several years traveled great distances to attend their concerts, later becoming their friends. He was always proud of those friendships, and continued a close relationship with one of their members, Jimmy Fortune. Harvey loved to hunt and fish, and shared many stories of his experiences with his family. After Bennie's death in May of 2005, Harvey continued to be active in the community of Boswell, serving on the city council and then as Mayor in 2008. He did many good things for the town while serving as mayor, but he was most proud of assisting the officials of Dollar General so they could purchase land and build a much needed store in Boswell. He and Martha Short of Pryor, Oklahoma were married on July 12, 2008 and lived in Boswell until October 2009 when they moved to Pryor. Harvey loved his Lord and became active in the Church of Christ in Pryor until his health would no longer allow him to do the things he loved to do. Harvey made friends easily - he was easy to love. Harvey loved life and he loved to travel, and spoke often of the first trips he took with his parents to Oregon when he was eleven and fourteen years old, before many of the roads through the mountain passes were paved. This was the beginning of his great love for God's wondrous creations. He was witty and charming, kind and gracious, and full of joy. He greatly enjoyed the camaraderie of friends and family. He had such good times being with other Christians, and especially loved the fellowship dinners, the fish fries, the ice cream suppers, the men's breakfasts, and most especially the watermelon feeds. He greatly looked forward to being part of these events, and would make sure they were marked on the calendar at home. Harvey is getting to see all of God's beautiful creations now and is loving every minute of it. But he will be missed by all of us left here who loved him. His love of God showed through during the last few weeks he spent in the hospital and Clarehouse, never complaining and more likely than not, at the beginning of his final journey, when asked 'How are you doing today?" he would reply 'I'm okay. How are you?' Harvey is survived by his wife, Martha of the home, and children, Joe David Floyd of Ratcliffe, Arkansas, Stanley 'Elmo' Dean Floyd and wife LaDonna of Russellville, Arkansas, Alicia McCann and husband Brian of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and George Floyd and wife Lisa of Eugene, Oregon, and by a very special cousin, Sondra Anderson and her husband, Gerry of Gravette, Arkansas. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, step children, Eddy St. John, Teddy St. John, Angie St. John and her husband Jay, Trisha Dodd and her husband Branon. Harvey is also survived by special step - grandchildren, Cody St. John, Peyton Tuttle, Seth Dodd, Brooke Dodd and Kate Dodd and by many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Bennie Floyd, one child, Danny Ray Floyd, his brothers, Carl Edward Floyd, Charles Edward Floyd, Billy Gene Floyd, Jimmy Ralph Floyd, and sisters, Emma Grace Floyd Harper and Mary Louise Floyd Daniels.
