Hazel Helmuth

Hazel Irene Helmuth was born June 30, 1937 to Harold and Hazel Miller at their home near Protection, Kansas. She went home to be with Jesus on Friday, December 3, 2021 at the age of 84 years. The family moved from Kansas to Pryor, Oklahoma in 1949. On February 28, 1956, she married Jacob Helmuth, Jr. Irene attended Ogreeta grade school and then Pryor High School, graduating in 1956. She attended RSC and graduated in May 1990. She received her Oklahoma Insurance Agent’s license in February 1990 and sold insurance until her retirement in 2002. Irene had many interests: She enjoyed sewing, double knit rugs and comforter tops, writing poems and short stories, playing board games and dominoes, wintering in South Texas and spending time with family. In her younger years, she taught Sunday School and Bible School. She and Jake were youth sponsors for many years. On different years, she was president, secretary, and treasurer of Zion Ladies Fellowship and attended the Ladies Sewing Circle when possible. She was a member of the Zion Mennonite Church.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 6, 2021 in the Zion Mennonite Church with Reverend Duey Matthews officiating. Burial will follow in the Zion Mennonite Cemetery with Daylon Ramsey, Jake Helmuth, Justin Baughman, Jared Baughman, Ethan Helmuth, Roy Kerns, Shaun Barrett, Josh Martin, Jared Chidester, and Blake Hughey serving as casket bearers. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Sunday, December 5, 2021 at Shipman’s Funeral Home in Pryor. Irene is survived by one son, Barry Helmuth of Pryor, Oklahoma; two daughters, Becky Helmuth of Adair, Oklahoma and Vicki and husband Rodney Littlefield of Adair, Oklahoma; daughter in law, Donna Helmuth of Pryor, Oklahoma; son in law, Wesley Gay of Adair, Oklahoma; sister, Chris Scheffel of Pryor, Oklahoma; brother, Lee Miller of Lebanon, Oregon; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and 1 on the way; adopted grandkids, Jared and Kristin Chidester and family; and friends forever, Lydia Troyer. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jacob (Jake) Helmuth; sons, Richard and Robert (Bob) Helmuth; daughter, Cynthia (Cindy) Gay; parents, Harold and Hazel Miller; 5 brothers, Eugene, Wayne, Russell, Kenneth, Ralph and Dale; parents in law, Jake and Emma Helmuth.
