James Melton Long passed away in Enid, Oklahoma on June 18, 2018 after a short illness. He was born on November 10, 1922, the son of Jasper Erve and Luetta (McClelland) Long. He graduated from Jay High School and then served in the military with The First Army and fought in five major battles including Normandy and The Bulge.
After discharge from the army he attended Cameron Junior College in Lawton, Oklahoma and afterward was a Game Ranger with Oklahoma Fish and Game Department for a number of years before attending Oklahoma State University where he was awarded a Bachelor's Degree Horticulture.
He then went to work for OSU Extension Service as a Horticultural Area Agent in Enid, Oklahoma for 23 years until retirement.
He was involved in many activities in retirement and enjoyed working in his workshop on various projects. He loved woodworking and his family thought he could build or fix anything. He was a carpenter, welder, beekeeper, electrician and plumber in addition to other skills.
He will be forever remembered as a loving, dedicated husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, and friend. Always an engaging sense of humor - he loved the sound of laughter and jokes and pranks delighted him. His enduring legacy will be a life characterized by quiet dignity, humble servanthood, love of God's creation, and selfless dedication to his family.
James is survived by his wife of 67 years, Cleta; daughter, Karen and husband Jack; son, Randy and his wife Lori; and son Brette. Grandchildren include Jamie Angel, Katy Long and Emily Long and Great Granddaughter, Addyson Angel. He was preceded in death by his brother Carl and infant brother, Jasper Ray and parents.
In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to Life Fellowship Church Building Fund, Pryor, Oklahoma in care of Shipman Funeral Home.
