James “Jim” Virgil Hawkins, Jr., 85, of Pryor, passed from this life on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, in Oklahoma City. He was born on June 19, 1936 in Piedmont, Kansas; the son of James Virgil Hawkins Sr. and Mary Helen (Stanley) Hawkins. Jim grew up in Kansas, and later in life moved to Pryor and truly loved the community here. He was an outstanding athlete, participating in football, basketball, and track. Jim had a successful career within the nuclear power industry having only a high school education. He dearly loved his family and looked forward to spending time with them. Jim was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Pryor and was always there to help in any way he could. He also supported Pryor High School sports and attended sporting events faithfully. Jim loved to travel and was proud to have visited every state. He was a loving father and grandfather who leaves behind many wonderful memories for his family and friends to cherish.
Funeral services for Jim will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at First Baptist Church of Pryor with Dr. Mike Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Graham Memorial Cemetery with J.J. Daugherty, Trina Taylor, Breanoh Lafayette – Brooks, Joshua Daugherty, Sarah Rodriguez, and Shea McVea serving as casket bearers. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at Shipman’s Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m., to 8:00 p.m. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church in Pryor. Jim is survived by his son, James Hawkins and wife Denise of Haughton, Louisiana; daughters, Carol Matheny of Granbury, Texas and Linda Lafayette of Chesterfield, Virginia; brother, Bill Hawkins and wife Sally of Overland Park, Kansas; sister, Mary McClung and husband Jim of Winfield, Kansas; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; constant and loving companion of 15 years, Judy Davis; lifelong friend, Joyce Mills; and Judy’s 2 daughters, 8 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren, who considered Jim their family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Helen; wife of 53 years, Loweta; daughter, Debra Daugherty (2010); and lifelong friend, H.D. Mills.
