John Murray

John Perry Murray, 72, of Pryor, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was born on April 5, 1942 in Lockwood, Missouri; the son of Bill and Lorene (Sifferman) Murray. He graduated Pryor High School in 1961 and faithfully served his country in the National Guard for 13 years. John was a scholar of the Bible from an early age. Since retirement he had devoted time to writing his own commentary on each book of the New Testament. Becoming a grandfather to Robert was a highlight of his life. Football games, wrestling matches, and their weekly breakfasts were favorite activities and gave him great joy. Since the death of his father, John took on many roles in the family. He was willing to play the role of father and walk his youngest sister down the aisle at her wedding. He took on the roles of grandfather to his sister's children, Rebecca, Porter and Hunter. When his brother - in- law died, he became great grandfather to Rebecca's sons, Weston and Gage. John was also willing to become the real life cowboy to every child who visited, by sharing his horses and prowling through the barn with them. John provided a wonderful country experience for all. He has particularly enjoyed traveling during the last few years. Devotion to his God and to his family sums up the life of John Murray. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 12, 2014 in the Church of Christ in Pryor with Michael Nelson and Ron Rose officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery with Darrell Applegate, Dalton Huff, J.E. Casey, Tom Coats, Gary Risner and Jeff Lair serving as casket bearers. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, April 11, 2014 in the Shipman Funeral Home Chapel. John is survived by his wife, Jean Murray of the home; his son, James Murray of Moody, OK; his daughter, Jill and husband David Stanley of Pryor, Oklahoma; 2 sisters, Billie Linam of Piedmont, OK and Patti and husband Bob of Oviedo, FL; grandchild, Robert and wife Stephanie Stanley of Pryor, OK; niece, Rebecca and husband Jack Baker of Anadarko, OK; nephews, Porter and Hunter Maerz of Oviedo, FL, and Weston and Gage Baker of Anadarko, OK; many cousins; many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Lorene Murray, his in-laws, Chester and Gladys Dotson, and brother-in-law, Jim Linam.
