Josephine (Backwater) Summerfield, 77, of Kenwood, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2019 surrounded by her family. She was born on October 28, 1941 in Kenwood, Oklahoma; the daughter of Jim and Katie (Wofford) Backwater. Josephine married John Summerfield in Amazing Grace Church in Kenwood. She was an entrepreneur and also an ordained minister. She attended Rhema Bible College in Broken Arrow. She was a member of the Holy Mountain Church in Kenwood and loved to minister, study God’s word and writing scripture. She was always willing to help with the jail ministry and helping those in need. Josephine loved to do beadwork, to paint and garden. She also enjoyed running a flea market in Grove. Josephine loved to cook and was known for her biscuits and gravy and frybread. Josephine leaves behind many wonderful memories and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 26, 2019 in the Lakeview Baptist Church in Salina with Reverend Duke Pickup officiating. Burial will follow in the Euwasha Cemetery in Kenwood with Alex Bendabout, Darren Baker, Junior Wofford, Dewayne Bendabout, Jr., Eric Meisenheimer, and G.P. Sutter serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Clifford Wofford, Willey Wofford and David King. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 25, 2019 at Shipman’s Funeral Home. Josephine is survived by sons, Arnold Bendabout and wife Anna of Kenwood, Oklahoma, Ronald Bendabout and wife Toni of Pryor, Oklahoma, Dewayne Bendabout and wife Sheila of Kenwood, Oklahoma and Jason Bendabout of Kenwood, Oklahoma; brothers, Willis Backwater and wife Linda of Kenwood, Oklahoma and Billy Backwater and wife Karen of Pryor, Oklahoma; sisters, Geneva Doerflinger of Claremore, Oklahoma and Mary Sutter and husband Rick of Adair, Oklahoma; 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Charlie James Bendabout; second husband, John Summerfield; and brothers, Wiley James Backwater and Jimmy Backwater.
