Leona Janet Cates, 85, of Locust Grove, Oklahoma, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2020 in Salina, Oklahoma. She was born on February 28, 1934 in Russellville, Arkansas, the daughter of Joseph Edward Roberts Sr. and Iva Mae (Edmondson) Roberts. Janet moved with her family from Arkansas when she was 10 years old. She enjoyed babysitting, roller skating, ironing clothes for neighbors and when older she worked at 5 & 10 cent stores and as a car hop at local Drive ins. She married right before graduating high school and made her career as a homemaker taking care of her family. Janet enjoyed sewing and made all the clothes for her two girl’s and most of the time they were matching outfits. In her later years she enjoyed playing dominos and crocheting. She loved to Shop, Shop, Shop and collected everything. Janet enjoyed going to church and drove Nanny to preach for years until her eyesight caused her to quit driving after dark. She attended Cornerstone Outreach Church in Locust Grove, Oklahoma. Janet loved her family and the time she spent with them. A lovely lady of faith she loved her Lord and leaves a legacy of faith, love of life, and family for all to cherish.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 2 p.m. in the Cornerstone Outreach Church in Locust Grove, Oklahoma with Reverend John Kiddy officiating. Interment will be on Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 7, 2020 from 6-8 pm. in the Shipman’s Funeral Home. She is survived by her daughters, Janice Lou Jean Forbes of Locust Grove, OK and Iva Carol Brown and husband, Gerald of Locust Grove, OK; four grandchildren Tonia Harvey and husband, Ronny of Sperry, OK, Gerry Brown and wife, Kyla of Fort Gibson, OK, Leddy Brown and wife, Kami of Locust Grove, OK and Shauna Carr and Gary Qualls of Pryor, OK; 9 great grandchildren, Shelby, Taylor, Cody, Kelli, Paxton, Drake, Connor, Chase, and Giovanni; 3 great great grandchildren, Myles, Colt and Philip Jr.; sister-in-law, Anna Laura Roberts of Locust Grove, OK; many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Edward Roberts Sr. and Iva Mae (Edmondson) Roberts; brothers, Joe Roberts, Jr. and Jimmy Roberts; sister, Dorothia Jean Simpson; son-in-law, Chuck Forbes; great grandson, Tad Harvey.
