LeRoy Elkins Potter, 87, of Claremore, passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018 in Grove. He was born on September 16, 1930 in Delaware County, Oklahoma in the Jay area to Albert Burton Potter and Susie Anna (Silcox) Potter. LeRoy grew up on Spavinaw Creek near Jay, Oklahoma, where he attended school and helped his father in his saw mill business. LeRoy was raised in a Christian home and talked about his father's role as an elder in the church. He was baptized in Brush Creek near Jay, Oklahoma when he was 17 during a revival. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army from June 10, 1952 until December 10, 1952. He worked for his brother, Walter's, drilling mud company which involved traveling to oil wells in Oklahoma and other areas including overseas. He retired in the mid 80's and moved to Claremore, Oklahoma to be closer to relatives. LeRoy enjoyed time spent at the coffee shop visiting with friends. His last few months were spent at Grove Nursing Center in Grove, Oklahoma. He enjoyed it there, but illness over came him.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 23, 2018 in the Fairview Cemetery in Pryor with Reverend Paul Walvoord officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 23, 2018 in the Shipman's Funeral Home Chapel. LeRoy leaves behind many nephews and nieces, cousins, and distant relatives and their families and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Susie Potter, and his son, Howard LeRoy "Sammy" Potter; 9 brothers and sisters, Walter, Wilbert and Willie, Dolphus, Wilma, Foy, Lorene, Joe, and Zelma.
