Leroy Sellers

Ernest Leroy Sellers, 84, of Chouteau, Oklahoma, passed away on March 7, 2018 in Pryor, Oklahoma. He was born on September 15, 1933 in Chouteau, Oklahoma; the son of Lee Scott "Pete" and Daphne (Garton) Sellers. He started school in 1939 at Dooley School, northwest of Chouteau and in 1947, Dooley school consolidated with Chouteau, where he graduated in 1952. In 1949, he joined the National Guard and in 1952, joined the Airforce. He spent 4 years in the Airforce and the next 34 years in the Air Force Reserves, retiring in 1992 as Senior Master Sergeant. He married the love of his life, Joan Crawford, on January 13, 1956 in Chouteau, Oklahoma, and was married for 62 years. In 1960, he joined the Pryor Masonic Lodge #100, where he served as Worshipful Master three times. In 2009, he received the honor of the 33rd Degree from the Scottish Rite of Tulsa. He worked at Spartan Trailers in Tulsa, Spartan Aircrafts in Tulsa and numerous carpenter and construction jobs. He retired from Grede Foundry in 1996, after 22 years. He joined the Chouteau Volunteer Fire Department in 1958 and retired in 1988, the last 11 years he served as Fire Chief. He also was a member of the Chouteau City Council for several years, serving as Mayor for 3 years. He and Joan spent several years traveling and spending the winters where it was warm and the summers where it was cooler than Oklahoma.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 12, 2018 in the Chouteau First Baptist Church with Reverend Donnie Bendure officiating. Burial will follow in the Chouteau North Cemetery with his Lodge Brothers serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Richard Sellers, Roger Sellers, Chad Sellers, Josh Sellers, Tyler Sellers, Taylor Sellers, Madison Sellers, and Matt Hildebrant. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Sunday, March 11, 2018 in the Shipman's Funeral Home Chapel. He is survived by his wife, Joan Sellers of the home; sons, Roger W. Sellers and wife Lori of Paso Robles, California and Richard L. Sellers and fiancé Shawn Stillions of Chouteau, Oklahoma; brothers, Robert C. Sellers and wife Inez of Verdigris, Oklahoma; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and many more that called him Papa; uncle, Ernest Garton of Tulsa, Oklahoma; aunt, Mildred Garton of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Daphne Sellers.
