Mary Ellis

Obituary for Mary Janet "Jan" Ellis, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, passed this life on Thursday, November 30, 2017 in Oklahoma City. She was born on October 28, 1931 in Danville, Arkansas, the daughter of Wesley Gateley and Lassie Pilgrim (Burfield) Gateley. Jan wed Olen "Jack" Ellis in 1960 in Stigler, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death in May of 2002. She moved from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Locust Grove, Oklahoma in 1971, where she lived until November of 2002, when she moved to Oklahoma City to be closer to family. She was a wise and loving homemaker, an avid gardener, and a voracious reader of mystery novels. Jan attended the Church of Christ in Blair, Oklahoma and later the First Free-Will Baptist Church in Locust Grove. She was also a member of the Pryor Elkettes. A gentle and caring woman leaves behind many wonderful memories for all to cherish.

Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma with Rev. Larry Ellis officiating. She will be laid to rest with her husband, Olen. The family will receive friends at the Muskogee Cremation Service at 1325 N. She is survived by her sons, Richard Powell of Weatherford, OK; John Ellis-Etchison of Navasota, TX; daughter, Sabra Dawn Miller of Tulsa, OK; step-son, Larry Ellis of Muldrow, OK; step-daughter, Martha Pettus of Fort Smith, AR; brother, Bob Gateley of Moore, OK; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Lassie Gateley; husband, Olen "Jack" Ellis; siblings, Vaye Jackson, Floy Martin, Odell Gateley, and Hayes Gateley.
