She worked in the cafeteria for Tulsa Public Schools at Foster Junior High and East Central High School before joining the kitchen staff at Oral Roberts University Village Retirement Center where she worked for more than 20 years. In 1971 the family moved to Pryor where they joined Pleasant View Baptist Church and Mildred again served as a Vacation Bible School volunteer. After retiring, she and Donald traveled across the U.S. attending gospel singings in their RV. Mildred continued her spirit of volunteerism by helping Meals on Wheels and working at the Free Medical Clinic of Mayes County.
