Milton Honawa, Sr.

Milton Honawa, Sr., born May 31, 1939 in Hotevilla, Arizona and passed from this life on February 3, 2018 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Milton is a graduate of Haskell Indian Jr. College. He worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for the majority of his life, retiring from Eastern State Hospital in Vinita, Oklahoma. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1975 at Faith Baptist Church in Lawrence, Kansas. Milton enjoyed playing the harmonica, listening to gospel music, and loved to visit his family in Arizona. He also enjoyed eating traditional Cherokee Foods. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, who leaves behind many memories for his family to cherish.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 7, 2018 in the Ribbon Baptist Church in Spavinaw with Reverend Floyd Kingfisher and Reverend Jim Carey officiating. Burial will follow in the Ribbon Cemetery with Eldric Yeager, Isaac Rhoads, Toby Rhoads, Vinnie Martinez, Tim Washee, and Jason Collins serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Gus Rhoads, Matthew Honawa, Oscar Sean Richardson, Sam Davis, Thomas Davis, and Terry Davis. Visitation will be held at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 6, 2018 in the Ribbon Baptist Church in Spavinaw. To leave his family a message, please visit his Tribute Wall at www.shipmansfuneralhome.com. Milton is survived by his wife and sweetheart of 55 years, Genice Davis Honawa; four daughters, Eliza of Langley, Oklahoma, LaVera June of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Miltona of Langley, Oklahoma, and Denise of Okmulgee, Oklahoma; one son, Milton Jr. of Langley, Oklahoma; 14 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Leora Kayquaptewa and Cheryl Tenakhongva of Hotevilla, Arizona; two brothers, Daryl Tenakhongva of Tuba City, Arizona and Clark Tenakhongva of Polacca, Arizona. He is preceded in death by his mother, Louise Tenakhongva, three brothers, Jerry, Sam and Ted, and sister, Rebecca; granddaughter, Jesse Rae and great grandbabies, Ruger and Remington.
