Nancy Ross Petty South Bend, Indiana Nancy Ross Petty passed away peacefully on March 28, 2011. A former resident of Cherokee County, Nancy was born at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. As a member of a military family she grew up in Germany, and in military bases all over the United States. She graduated as Class Valedictorian of Kansas High School - Kansas, OK. Nancy graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1995 with a BS in Psychology. She earned a Masters of Social Work from Indiana University South Bend, and was pursuing a second Masters Degree in Counseling. Nancy married her loving husband Ron on August 17, 1996; they were raising their children Paige and Seth in South Bend, Indiana. She is also survived by her father, Forman Ross of Kenwood, Oklahoma, three siblings, Karen Ross and Eddy Ross of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and Buddy Ross of Jay, Oklahoma. Nancy was preceded in death by her mother, Emma Proctor Ross. Nancy will be remembered as the best mother in the world, wife, sister, and friend. She was known for her generosity, kindness, and wonderful sense of humor. She directed a Cherokee Nation after school program in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. She was school Social Worker in Cassopolis, Michigan; a Counselor at Elkhart Memorial High School. Nancy served as the first Chair of the Native American Alumni Board at Notre Dame from 2004-2007. She served on the parent committee for the Native American Education Program, for the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi in Dowagiac, Michigan. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 2pm in the Kenwood School Gym. Pastors Woodrow Ross and Utah Humphrey will officiate. Burial will take place in the Euwasha Cemetery, Kenwood, Oklahoma with Eddy Ross, Buddy Ross, Jon Ross, Caleb Ross, John Backwater and Danny Crittenden serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers are Anthony Ross, Michael Ross, Wadie Proctor, Clayton Proctor and Terry Proctor. To leave a message to her family please see her web memorial at www.shipmansfuneralhome.com.
