Paul Cox, 88, of Pryor, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2014 in Claremore, Oklahoma. He was born on January 1, 1926 in Bixby, Oklahoma; the son of Ulysess and Beulah (Fisher) Cox. Paul faithfully served his country in the United States Navy from June 28, 1944 until July 31, 1946, during World War II. After being honorably discharged from the military, he married his high school sweetheart Verda Cowell on November 9, 1946; she preceded him in death in 1959. Paul then married Irene Godwin on May 10, 1963 and spent many wonderful years together, until her passing in 2009. Paul retired from American Airlines where he worked as a mechanic for 33 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pryor where he served as a Deacon and a Sunday School teacher. Paul enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing. Paul loved to plant a garden each year and enjoyed sharing the bounty with friends and neighbors. He was an avid football and baseball fan and he always liked rooting for the underdog. Later in life, Paul took up painting and drawing. He spent many hours playing dominos with friends and family though out his life and rarely lost. He leaves behind many wonderful memories and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 14, 2014 in the First Baptist Church in Pryor with Reverend Wendell Lang and Reverend Josh Greer officiating. Interment will follow in the Bixby Cemetery in Bixby, Oklahoma. Casket bearers will be grandsons Kevin Godwin, Sean Wood, Justin Hobbs, Travis Hobbs, Josh Cox, and Jeromy Cox. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, November 13, 2014 in the Shipman's Funeral Home Chapel in Pryor. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Pryor DAV or to the Wounded Warrior Project. Paul is survived by his sons, Daniel and wife Jean Cox of Claremore, Oklahoma and Darryl and wife Sue Godwin of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma; daughters, Marilyn and husband Harold Hobbs of Adair, Oklahoma and Shirley and husband Michael Estes of Hillsboro, Oregon; sister, Carolyn Holm of Ketchum, Oklahoma; 10 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by wives Verda and Irene; son, Gary Cox; great grandson; Gary Hawkin; his parents, Ulysess and Beulah Cox and brothers, Robert Cox, Clifford Cox, Olen Cox and Turk Cox.
