Ronald Lee "Ron" Powers, 78, of Pryor, died November 30, 2017. Ron graduated from Barnsdall High School and continued his education earning his Bachelor of Theology Degree from Midwest Christian College in Oklahoma City, OK. Later, he attended Fort Hays State College in Hays, KS where he earned his Master of Science degree in Guidance, Counseling and Psychology. Ron married Judith Lorraine Ayres, his high school sweetheart from Barnsdall, OK. They were married 58 wonderful years and shared the joy of raising their 5 children. Ron's lifelong commitment to the ministry of the gospel started at Hillside Christian Church in Nowata, OK as an associate pastor. During his last 2 years of bible college, he preached at a small mission church in a poverty-stricken area of Oklahoma City called Mulligan Flats. After completion of his degree, he moved to Hinton, OK to serve in full time ministry at the First Christian Church. Several years later he was offered a ministry position at the First Christian Church of Shattuck, OK where he chose to move and continue to share the gospel. Ron desired to obtain a higher degree of education and began his search for an open ministry closer to Fort Hays College. He moved to Meade, KS and pastored the Christian Church, while completing his graduate degree. Later, Ron moved to Great Bend, KS and started the Community Christian Church. Several years later, Ron moved to Welch, OK and began his ministry at the First Christian Church. In 1972, Ron moved to Pryor, OK where he began a ministry at the First Christian Church in Chouteau, OK. He continued serving this congregation until retirement from full time ministry in 1982. Following retirement of the full-time ministry, Ron continued to preach and share the gospel in interim ministries for many area churches. Ron was also employed by the State of Oklahoma Employment Service from 1972 until his retirement from the state in 2004. In addition to helping people find jobs, he was the handicapped coordinator for the area. Ron's desire to assist anyone with a handicap led him to learn sign language. He was elected to serve on the Vo-Tech school board for 10 years. Ron loved sports and was an umpire and referee for football, baseball, and fast pitch men's softball, and was a coach for Little League baseball. Some of his hobbies include gardening, hunting, fishing, piloting small private planes, and was very big into CB radios. His CB radio call name was "Sky Pilot". Ron was a very mechanical minded man, and took pride in doing his own repairs. A trait he passed down to all 5 of his children. In past years, he was active in Lion's, Sertoma, and Civitan Clubs. Ron was a very special and unique individual. He loved helping people and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
